Our classroom consists of multiple learning centers including dramatic play, blocks, art, science, math, and a quiet area. Learning centers help children organize material and classify information. As children return items to the proper place, they learn responsibility and how to care for materials. As children engage in self-selected tasks, I observe the habits of selection, the nature of the activity chosen and the growth of social skills. Good learning centers provide children with time to cultivate ideas, a place to preserve it, and opportunities to share with peers and other adults.
Dramatic Play center:
Through dramatic play, children identify with models, roles and unique situations in their environment. Through meaningful experiences in expressive play, young children develop positive, comfortable feelings about themselves.
Block center:
Young children learn best through play. As the child explores the world around him, he/she matures through this environmental interaction. Block play offers preschoolers both basic skills and creative outlets.
Quiet area:
A designated safe space for those with overwhelming and/or overloading sensory input from their environment. Children who are upset, angry, tired, or overwhelmed enter freely when needing a break. Self-regulation helps children deal with their emotions and control their behavior.
The student and early childhood educator ratio here at little jaybird's is 8 to 1. Benefits of a small class size:
- Small class sizes lead to more one-on-one attention from the teacher.
- Children get to know each other better.
- Early childhood educator can tailor instruction more individually.
Your child/ren will continue each year with the same educator, myself, until Kindergarten. Benefits of a looping classroom:
- Allows for stronger teacher-student-parent relationships.
- Reduces the time teachers and students spend in learning about one another and class routines.
- Allows for connections between student learning across the years.
